When you are going on hiking, mountain biking, or fishing make sure that you take a GPS machine with you. A quality GPS tracker will provide you the directions and coordinates to areas you know little or nothing about. Plus, in some cases, these devices monitor your heartbeat to provide you a more advanced set of data.
Among the GPS systems, Garmin Foretrex 401 seemed the best to me out of all those that I have used. It is used in military missions. That is why it delivers the matrix with precision while displaying distance in miles.

It is also compatible with MGRS (Military Grid Reference System). In this review, I’ll be going through few of the additional benefits that Garmin Foretrex 401 has.
The Design is Pretty Sleek
Also, the GPS is weatherproof. You can expect it to give you a stable performance even if the weather is rough, there is dust flying around and even if it is raining. The making allows you to transfer your waypoints from one GPS to the other wirelessly.
Provides Top-Notch Performance in Toughest Areas
Thankfully, you can even track your location in areas where there are trees all around thanks to the HotFix feature. It allows you to know your whereabouts even in denser areas due to the High-Quality GPS receiver.
You can even check the status of your current position in multiple formats. I enjoy this feature as it allows me to filter a lot of things and at times get additional information about the place I am traveling.
It is Your Total Guide
Indeed, Garmin Foretrex 401 GPS Tracker serves as a guide for people who love hiking. For instance, it keeps tracks of my routes and waypoints for me.
Also, it is a total computer for trips. You can calculate the time for sunrises and sunsets within the system. When you are on camping trips, this GPS locator helps you to find nearby fishing locations and restaurants for refreshment purposes.
I really liked the fact that this machine has a compass and a barometer as well. These two things help to calculate the elevation. Especially, you get to see everything in 3D view.
Retrace Your Steps and Do a Lot More…
I was particularly impressed with this feature. Garmin Foretrex 401 retraces your last known location and waypoints accurately to help people find you if you are lost.
The LCD Display provides you a clear idea of where you are and where you should go. It requires 2 AAA batteries to function correctly.
While hiking, you can monitor your heartbeat thanks to a sensor monitor which you will need to purchase separately.
- Compact design makes it fit any bag or pouch.
- It even has a backlight.
- The machine is accurate under demanding conditions.
- You can calculate moving speed, average elevation gain or loss and also can customize these features.
- It gives a 3D view of google maps.
- It doesn’t have “Stop” option.
- It doesn’t have wireless transfer feature. You’ll have to use USB drive for that.
If you want a state-of-the-art GPS system, you’ve got to get your hands on Garmin Foretrex 401. I recently compared it with Garmin Foretrex 301 and found that the latter couldn’t count elevation changes.
Used in Military operations, the Garmin Foretrex 401 GPS Tracker is your best shot at tracking your hiking activities. It doesn’t leave out a tiny feature of the backlight.
You can spot the GPS system even in the night time. It is a perfect GPS for the bike riders and hikers alike.
